China House 3. Tilghman Square Shopping Center, Allentown PA! Their hibachi is awesome! Filet and Lobster I recommend! If the owner is there, she may give you a sip of what you see below. Kweichow! It tastes like jet fuel! Apparently it’s what they give Diplomats, Presidents, Celebrities, in China… It certainly made us think we were! ;)

My wife introduced me to Datillo’s Deli. It’s in North Philadelphia a skip and jump off of Roosevelt Boulevard. I discovered that a real roasted pork sandwich is hard to find…I guess you can say an ‘authentic’ one with their clear sauce, homemade rolls, cheese, and pork…this place is THE place to get it. Their mac salads are also pretty amzing! It took us hours to find the place on the internet and over the phone, since the wife has a short term memory… We weren’t sure of the name then we finally found it!

The famous Waldorf Astoria. New York City. Enough said.  Just amazing, rustic, full of history, and had a ton of character. Our friend John hooked us up for the wife’s Birthday with this awesome cheese/fruit/wine plate in our room when we arrived!

           Our ”Gourmet Guy” promotion at WLEV and Cat Country 96 in The Lehigh Valley with EDGE sold out of their gift cards in 90 minutes! This means you should read this and GO there!

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining with our good friends at EDGE in Bethlehem. Edge is located on Broad Street at the intersection of Broad and Main – arguably one of the best “corners” in The Lehigh Valley. There is so much going on in downtown historic Bethlehem with the shops, eateries, etc. that EDGE just feels like it was ALWAYS supposed to be right here!  Living close by, we have frequented it often for happy hour appetizers. My wife, loves the Wednesday “Ladies Night” and of course, I’m NOT invited… But that’s okay! From the beautiful relaxed ambiance and decor, to the restaurant layout, staff, food, and all around experience and knowledge of cuisine – EDGE is by far one of the BEST places to dine in the area. (Legend has it that Larry Holmes’ son had his birthday party there that night so even the stars stop by!)

Our server Jamie has been with EDGE for a long time and Restaurant Manager Jessie Dech said that Jamie is his ‘Floor Captain’. That he is! Jamie has EVERYTHING in his head from the specials, to the regular menu items, to why certain wines go with certain dishes. I highly recommend asking for him!  Jesse is also a master of pairing wine with food at EDGE. The place was packed on this particular Thursday night which means they are doing something right!

We began our EDGE experience with a round of wine. We had the house Cabernet out of California, a Merlot from the same region, and a White Wine Spritzer. 

Appetizers could not come soon enough as we know how good they already are! My wife had one of her favorites-the Escargot special! It was amazing, served with a tomato cream sauce, onions, and in a puff pastry! Not the traditional way I’ve seen it but that is why EDGE is so great…they do things differently. We also had Tuna Tartare with Crispy Wontons and an amazing Tarragon Gnocchi – Duck Confit along with Truffle Parmesan Sauce and Crispy Shallots.

 All of those mixed together in my mouth was heaven. Sherri had their famous Shrimp Cocktail Martini with Caper Horseradish Sauce and Mal had an Endive and Roasted Beet Salad and it honestly was something I never would order but I tried it and it was out of this world! Say hello to a guy that now likes BEETS at EDGE.

Dinner was on my mind since about 11am! I ordered the Black Angus New York Strip Steak Medium Rare, Frisee, Truffle Parmesan Frites, and Au Poivre Sauce! How do you think it was? Right! Perfect! Plus they do it right! Executive Chef, Tim Widrick is amazing. I was speaking with one of EDGE Restaurant’s managing partners, Fran, and he reinforced what I just said. I was talking about the steak and Fran told me they pan sear it first then when it’s cooked to order, they let it rest. NOT a lot of places do it right like that. EDGE does!

 My wife enjoyed the Long Island Duck Breast which was so tender and juicy.  It came with Sourdough Spaetzle, Broccolini, and Dried Cherry Gastrique. Yum!

 Mal went outside the box and got the New Zealand Rack of Lamb with Green Olive Yogurt & Drizzle and I was lucky enough to get a taste!  Those of you who never have had lamb…EDGE is the place to try it! 

 Sherri enjoyed the Grilled Hawaiian Butterfish on a Salad of Baby Spinach along with Hydro Bibb Lettuce, Romaine Hearts, Parsley, Wonton Crutons, and a Lemon Thyme Vinaigrette. I have rarely seen Butter Fish on a menu before and being a seafood lover, I had a bite. It was SO RICH and delicious. Not too overpowering from a fish standpoint so if you like fish but don’t like that ‘fishy’ taste, THIS is a great dish!

We finished up with a sampling of Warm Banana Pound Cake with Maraschino Cherry Ice Cream, a Salted Carmel Chocolate Tart, and Mal and Sherri split a Toasted Coconut Molasses Tiramisu.  Mal said it’s not traditional Tiramisu so he wanted to try it…Mal fell in love! I had some too and the coconut was a nice crunchy addition to pair with the creamy Tiramisu! 

All in all, EDGE is a place we’ve been to before and a place we’ll be back to…a lot! A big thanks to Fran, Chef Tim, Jessie, Jamie, Glenn, and Kim @ EDGE. Gourmet Guy went home stuffed and happy and we had a wonderful night with wonderful friends! We’ll see you soon…my wife especially for “Ladies Night”!

Green Eggs Cafe -Philadelphia, PA

     Yummy!!! When trying to decide where to go to brunch on Sunday morning, I used UrbanSpoon for my iTouch and it came up with Green Eggs Cafe  in South Philly.  So, I went online, looked at the menu/reviews, and hopped in the car.  When we got to the location, I was pleasantly surprised by the exterior and interior decor.  The building is newly renovated, spacious and has a clean but cozy feel.  The food is truly amazing.  I have now been there, twice in 2 weeks, 1 savory meal and 1 on the sweeter side. 

     My first visit I had the Smoked Atlantic Salmon omelet and was not disappointed.  The omelet came with capers with red onions and had a  whipped cream cheese topping.  The flavors were spot on and was the perfect portion size. On my second visit, I had one of the specials, the Chocolate and Raspberry stuffed french toast. Just by reading this, you may think that it would be overwhelmingly sweet, but on the contrary…  There was whipped Nutella and the raspberries were a little tart which made the dish very enjoyable.  The french toast was topped with a vanilla whipped cream that added the perfect amount of sweetness.

     My good friends from the Lehigh Valley were visiting and tried the special, the marinated skirt steak, scrambled eggs, and their signature new potato side. The steak was prepared perfectly to his desire and the potatoes stood up to their signature status, the seasonings were just great. His wife had the granola and fresh fruit. She was amazed at the freshness of the fruit and the incredible fruit granola combined with yogurt hit the spot.

     I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to have amazing food in a good atmosphere with a knowledgeable wait staff.  Oh, not to mention they serve fresh La Colombe coffee everyday… How’s that for a starter!

Oh, by the way, no entrees on the brunch menu are over $9!!! Nice.

Hometown Heroes’ – Bethlehem, PA

Rice Balls

     For $3.50 these cheese and rice filled fried creations are one of a kind in the Lehigh Valley! Served with hot marinara sauce! MMMMmmmmmm! If you can find Hometown Heroes on Geopp Street hidden in Bethlehem, you must go there! Owner’s John and Pauley (Brooklyn transplants Father and Son), serve up some incredible sandwiches with old brooklyn italian flare. It’s a small place, maybe 10 seats at the bar and a few tables, but this is one of those places that you can’t help but feel incredibly comfortable and leave very well fed. There isn’t one person that we’ve taken there in the last few years its been open that didn’t love it! the wife LOVES the pierogies. Gets them every time.

Lehigh Valley Hospital Food Rules!-Allentown, PA

 Seriously, I think after my dad’s surgery I’m just going to come back here to Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network to simply eat a few times a week! This cafeteria is honestly better than most restaurants in the area. And I sincerely mean that! They shouldn’t even promote the statistics and health care options, they should just say, “Be a patient at the LVH and your family won’t stab you due to the food after you’re released.”

                                                   

I walked into the cafeteria figuring it would be good but not GREAT and just had the typical “cafeteria in a hospital” expectations of eggs and home fries. Boy how times have changed. Now, granted I did walk in there with my sister at about 7am so not much was up and running yet but by the layout of this place, it’s going to be rockin’ by about 11am.  I actually had breakfast a few minutes ago and 1. it  was great and 2. it was CHEAP! And when I say cheap, it in NO way meant “poor quality”. I literally looked at the breakfast menu and instantly went for the omelet!  You can get a plain omelet for 99 cents but why do that when you can an omelet with cheese and meat for 2 bucks! Unreal!  I of course went healthy since we are at a hospital and opted for the egg white omelet! Yumm Yumm!

You literally could eat off the floor in there or in this case, operate on someone b/c the place is THAT clean.  The first thing that caught my eye was sushi! Yes SUSHI! Fresh made every day right there in front of your eyes.  Guess what I’m having for lunch today?  The LVH cafeteria also features a pasta bar, grill, mein bowl featuring Asian cusine, a salad bar, a deli bar, several self serve displays with cereal, fruit, drinks, veggies, etc. and DUNKIN DONUTS coffee! The beverage area actually has a contract with DD so the coffee is even bangin’!  

                                                                                          

Basically, this is a reason to get sick and be admitted for a few days. Times have changed and this literally is a place I’d come to eat even if I had no reason to be here! Kudos to the Lehigh Valley Hospital for already being a fantastic place for making sick people better but I tell you what…Your cafeteria is slam-tastic!   It’s about time for lunch so I’m outta here to get me some spicy tuna roll at the sushi counter!
