Thai Thai II

Category : Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Restaurant Reviews, The Lehigh Valley

Recently, I asked a bunch of friends where they had their best meal ever and I was overwhelmed told to try a couple Thai food places in the Lehigh Valley. I picked Thai Thai II for my first Thai food experience. I went with my wife and a couple friends; I’ve found that good food is better with good friends. We arrived at about 6pm on a Sunday and found very close parking right on the street across from the restaurant.  The restaurant has a very small entrance with a small sign out front so don’t miss it when you go. It was busy but we were seated in just a few minutes. We were seated in a nice back room and quickly waited on by one of the many waiters running from table to table. The menu is filled with tasty sounding appetizers and meals. They also have a large selection of vegetarian meals.

Thai Thai II is BYOB and had we know that beforehand we would have brought a bottle of wine to go with dinner, but no worry, the food was worth it. We did find a very interesting Thai Iced Tea that was a delicious and refreshing mixture of strong black Thai tea and a sweetened condensed milk mixture. It was very refreshing and nice change from the normal drinks.

I chose to share an appetizer, with my wife, of Thai Dumplings which were steamed and filled with pork and crab. They were very fresh and obviously just cooked as they were very, very hot. The soy dipping sauce that accompanied it was the perfect amount of salty and flavor filled. Just a small dip was enough to accentuate the flavor of the dumpling. Our friends went with the fried tofu appetizer. Let me first say that I am not a tofu fan, I’ve tried it numerous times and always feel it’s like a non-flavored rotten marshmallow. Our friends and my wife raved over the tofu and the sweet and sour dipping sauce with peanuts on top. So I tried it. Not too bad! Maybe I just haven’t had good tofu before.

When it came to a main course there were so many choices it took us a little while to choose. When all was said and done we all decided on different curries. I went with the Panang curry. This is a dry curry which is fried in coconut milk, and not boiled. Panang uses the thicker part of the milk, or the cream only. It’s typically made with beef, although you can order it with pork or chicken as well. I chose beef and my wife chose chicken. The curry smelled so good and got spicier as you kept eating it. It had a heavy peanut taste and the meat was tender and flavorful. Thai Thai II added some fresh veggies like beans and carrots.

Our one friend chose the Red Curry. Thai Red Curry Recipe is fragrant andsumptuous, and can be made anywhere from mild to red-hot, depending on your taste. He ordered his Mild, another thing that is great about this place; you can order your food to your spicy liking. The curry includes coconut milk, chicken, and some vegetables which come together to give you a healthy and hearty curry dish that awakens all your senses.

Our other friend chose the Massaman Curry. This is a Southern Thai curry which has a lot of Indian influence. Massaman is an old way of saying “Muslim”, for many of the dry spices were carried to Thailand by early Muslim traders. This curry is heavy on dry spices and very aromatic. It’s filled with lot of fresh veggies and loads of potatoes.

All the curry came with a big bowl of Jasmine rice that was great to dip into the bowl and tamed the heat a bit. The rice is different than most because of its fragrant smell and lightly sticky texture.

The overall ambiance is a great place to bring a date or just go out with friends for a good meal. We had a great time there and the price was very average for the area and type of meal.
